Choosing Your Joint Life Insurance Policy

As a couple you have some additional options to consider when looking for life insurance since you can have policies that are tied to both you and your spouse. The alternative route is for each member of a marriage to take out their own life insurance policy but this can potentially be expensive and could even be at odds with a couple's financial strategy. You may take out life insurance simply to provide for your spouse if you should die; that's exactly why having each member insured may be in a sense double insurance. A useful tool that can help save you money as a married couple is to take out a joint life insurance policy.

What is a joint policy and why use one?

With a joint life insurance policy the death benefit applies to both members of the pair and -- should either one die -- then a death benefit will be paid to the survivor. Alternatively upon death of one of the members of the couple, the insurance policy can be rolled over to cover the premiums for his or her own life insurance rather than being paid out directly. This is equivalent to what is called a survivorship policy, which only pays out in the event of both members of the couple dying. This is very beneficial in that you can have the level of life insurance you need but pay a lower premium, as you do not need a policy per person. In addition, additional flexibility is added in case one spouse dies at a point in time where the benefit is not needed then the coverage can roll over to the survivor and the payout will be made to the estate upon their death.
